Studying elsewhere in France: support schemes for resuming studies for exiled individuals
In France, several higher education institutions and partner networks have set up specific schemes to facilitate access or a return to studies for individuals in exile (refugees, asylum seekers, beneficiaries of subsidiary protection). These structures offer academic, linguistic, administrative, and sometimes social support to help foster integration into higher education.
A dedicated national network: the MEnS network – Migrants dans l’Enseignement Supérieur
Some universities have developed dedicated welcome structures, offering enhanced support for students in exile.
This is the case, for example, for theUniversité de Lille or even theUniversité de Strasbourg (non-exhaustive list).
These spaces may offer: administrative support, adapted courses, individualized mentoring, and activities to promote campus integration.
University Pathway Diplomas (DU Passerelle)
DU Passerelle programs are specifically designed for individuals in exile wishing to enter or re-enter French higher education.
There are currently around 40 such programs across the country. These diplomas generally offer: French as a Foreign Language (FLE) courses, an introduction to university methodology, and guidance and support for further studies. View the list of the various DU Passerelle programs
The essential role of associations and collectives
In addition to university support services, several associations and collectives play a key role in providing information, support, and defending the right to education for individuals in exile.
Universités Sans Frontières Network - RUSF
Present in many university cities, RUSF supports foreign and exiled students with their administrative and academic procedures.
Refugees higher education
Active in Lyon, the association works to facilitate access to higher education for exiled individuals through academic and administrative support.
UNIR
Based in Paris, the UNIR association supports the academic and professional integration of refugees.
