University credit
Passing exams earns one or more university credits. In the European Union, institutions generally use the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). 1 ECTS has the same value in all institutions that use this system. The number of credits for a course corresponds to the amount of work calculated as necessary to pass the exam and acquire the skills. A full semester corresponds to 30 ECTS.
Doctoral school
All doctoral schools make up the Doctoral College. Each doctoral student is "attached" to a doctoral school (ED) that brings together work in a particular disciplinary field. Each ED selects a few candidates once a year who receive a doctoral scholarship (known as "ministerial grants") and welcomes doctoral students who have obtained funding from another source or, in some cases, no funding at all.
In exile
It was decided to use the term "exile" rather than other terms. This term is not limited to the status of persons in exile, but also includes persons with refugee status, asylum seekers, stateless persons, persons benefiting from subsidiary protection, or persons with visas from countries in crisis.
Initial training
These are courses that you take directly after completing your schooling. You learn the basics of a profession.
Continuing education (CE)
This applies to people who have interrupted their studies for more than two years, who are working or have worked for several years, and who want to (re)take up training.
CEFR language levels
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) has defined a progression for learning languages. The levels range from A1 (complete beginner) to C2 (expert): A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2.
To be eligible to study in France in a degree program, you must have at least a B2 level.
The university cafeterias are managed by the CROUS. Students have access to a variety of meals at very reasonable prices. The most popular option is the full meal at €3.15 in the cafeteria.
Tutorials (TD)
These are classes with small groups of students (maximum thirty). It is mandatory to attend them in order to validate university credits.
Teaching unit (TU)
It is a course on a specific topic. A course unit generally consists of between 20 and 30 hours of classes (distance learning and/or face-to-face) and the same number of hours of independent study. When you pass a course unit, you earn one or more ECTS credits.
